forest Management plans
If you currently own 20 acres or more of forestland your property may be eligible for a reduction in property taxes through North Carolina’s Present Use Value Program. Mountain Roots Forestry can assist you through the process of enrolling your property into this program. MRF can also work to keep your property enrolled if you have recently purchased an enrolled property. MRF’s PUV tax plans provide the basic information required to enroll your property into this program. MRF also offers a more detailed or comprehensive plan writing service depending on what your overall goals are for your property. Contact us if you are interested in learning more about the PUV program or you have an interest in a more comprehensive management plan.
Timber Value Opinion / Timber Cruise / Timber Basis / Timber Appraisal
Determining the value of your standing timber prior to harvesting could potentially save you a tremendous amount in capital gains tax. The process of determining or establishing value prior to harvest is called establishing a basis. Ideally, the most optimal time to determine a basis is within one year of purchase or inheritance of a forested property. Fortunately, there is a process that allows you grow the timber backwards using growth yield models and historic timber value data in case you skipped this step when the property was originally acquired. It is also crucial to consult with your tax advisor/CPA for tax advice prior to selling your timber. Mountain Roots Forestry can also “cruise” or inventory your timber and determine a fair market value. Contact us to arrange for a free written quote or if you have more questions.
Timber Sales / Harvest monitoring
Mountain Roots Forestry can market and sell your timber to prospective buyers as well as oversee the harvesting activities to ensure they are meeting your overall property goals. MRF will represent you every step of the way from determining value of your timber, marketing your timber, negotiating a fair sale price, layout of the sale area, detailed mapping of roads/landings, buffering streams/sensitive areas, overseeing the harvest and closeout when the equipment leaves. It’s crucial that you cruise your timber and establish a basis prior to harvesting! Contact us if you are interested in selling your timber or learning more.
Property Boundary Retracement and Marking
Resource poaching and trespassing are not only threats to your overall enjoyment of your property they are also major safety concerns. The first step to protect your property from illegal activities is by marking your boundary lines with purple paint and visible signage. Mountain Roots Forestry can paint or blaze your entire property boundary using purple paint and signage if you have an established boundary. If you need to reestablish your boundary lines prior to blazing, MRF can connect you with recommended local surveyors.
Invasive Species Management and Removal
Invasive plants wreak havoc in North Carolina's woodlands, outcompeting native species and disrupting delicate ecosystems. Their unchecked growth can lead to reduced biodiversity, altered soil composition, and increased wildfire risks. Managing these invaders is crucial to preserving the health and resilience of our forests.
Mountain Roots Forestry, a licensed and insured herbicide applicator, offers effective solutions for invasive plant control. While mechanical removal is an option, it's often less efficient than targeted herbicide applications. Trust us to safeguard your wooded areas, restoring balance and protecting the natural beauty of North Carolina's landscapes.
